Horse Farm Waste Management – Vacuums
The first time I heard of a manure vacuum was when it was used in a study about parasite control in the early 1980’s. It was driven off of a PTO drive shaft from a tractor. Since then there are a few companies making gas powered self contained vacuums that can be pulled by any vehicle. I even have a do-it-yourself vacuum made from a leaf blower – see the related materials tab.

The idea is to place the large diameter vacuum hose over a pile of horse manure and suck it into a receptacle. This is useful for cleaning paddocks and pastures. It often beats a manure fork and dragging a bucket though that works too.
While these machines seem expensive, the savings occurs in the health of your horse as well as the health of the pasture. Many can be found used on the internet. Some have adapted the air intake of a leaf blower to creating a manure vacuum. In the related materials tab, there should be a PDF for this and I have been told that there is a YouTube video on this as well.
The secret behind parasite control is to pick up the manure before 3 days have passed. This is how long it takes for a larva to develop into a more mature, infective larvae. Vacuuming (or hand picking) the paddocks every other day will get these larvae before they become infective.
