Dapples

Horse Coat Features – The Dapple Hair Color Pattern

Dappling is the description given to any color horse exhibiting circles of a darker color (dark rings) over all of the body.  Seeing dapples on a horse is associated with the horse being in prime health and is not seen in horses receiving suboptimal nutrition.  When sufficient quantity of high quality protein is added as well as other factors such as grooming, dapples can appear in most horses.  Gray colored horses show dapples more in younger ages when their base pigment is still visible but as they age, dapples become less intense or disappear.
