Paper used for bedding has been around for a while and if you think about it, paper and cardboard are processed wood.  There are several types of shredded newspaper and chopped cardboard.

You will see a barn where they own a shredder and people drop off their used cartons and newspaper.  When spread onto a field, this material melts after a few days exposure.  However for the first day or two the field will look like it is covered in snow.

I think that the more absorbent the paper is the more wet it becomes.  While this may be good for eliminating urine it still creates a heat conducting barrier which will chill a horse in winter.
